Fairy Tale Witch Coloring Pages

A fairy tale needs a witch to really get going. These eight come from the classic fairy tales, and they aren't all the wicked crone you might expect. One was simply lonely, another handed over the seed that grew Thumbelina, and one turned a pumpkin into a coach.

The Candy Witch (Hansel and Gretel)

Two hungry children lost in the woods came across a little house made of bread, with a roof of cake and windows of clear sugar. They'd only just started nibbling when a very old woman hobbled out on a cane and invited them in for pancakes and soft, clean beds. It all seemed lovely until morning.

She was a witch who'd built her house to catch children, and she locked Hansel in a stable to fatten him up. Her eyes were weak, so every day she asked to feel his finger, and clever Hansel held out a little bone instead. When she finally lost patience and told Gretel to climb into the oven to check the heat, Gretel said she didn't know how. The witch leaned in to show her, and Gretel gave her one good shove and banged the door shut. The children filled their pockets with the witch's pearls and found their way home.

Dame Gothel (Rapunzel)

Next door to a young couple lived a powerful enchantress with a beautiful walled garden. The wife longed for the leafy rampion growing there, so her husband climbed the wall to pick some. The second time he was caught, and Dame Gothel let him go on one condition: their first baby would be hers.

She named the girl Rapunzel, after the plant, and when Rapunzel turned twelve she shut her in a tower with no door and no stairs. To visit, Gothel stood at the bottom and called, "Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair," then climbed up the long braids. A prince heard the call and tried it himself. When Gothel found out, she snipped off the braids, sent Rapunzel far away and waited at the window for the prince. He tumbled into the thorns below and wandered for years before he found Rapunzel again, and her happy tears healed his eyes.

The Queen in Disguise (Snow White)

Snow White's stepmother was proud of being the most beautiful woman in the land, and her magic mirror always agreed with her, right up until the day it named Snow White instead. When the queen learned the girl was alive and living with seven dwarfs, she dressed up as an old pedlar woman and went knocking.

The first time, she sold Snow White some pretty laces and pulled them so tight the girl fell down, but the dwarfs came home in time to cut them loose. The second time she brought a poisoned comb, and again the dwarfs saved her. The third time she made an apple that was poisoned on one side only, ate the safe half herself and handed over the rest. That bite put Snow White into the deepest sleep, until the prince's servants stumbled while carrying her glass coffin and the piece of apple shook loose.

The Cute (Wicked) Witch from The Frog Prince

The witch in this story only gets one line, but she's the reason any of it happens. Long before the story starts, she turned a young prince into a frog and left him in a well, where only a princess could break the spell.

One day a spoilt princess dropped her golden ball into that very well. The frog offered to fetch it if she'd let him eat from her golden plate and sleep on her pillow. She promised, grabbed the ball and ran off without him. The next evening the frog came knocking at the castle door, and the king made her keep her word. When the frog asked to be lifted into her bed, she got so cross that she threw him against the wall, and down dropped a handsome prince instead. That's right, in the Grimm brothers' version there's no kiss at all! His faithful servant Henry was so happy that the iron bands he'd wrapped around his heart to keep it from breaking all snapped, one after another, on the ride home.

The Sea Witch (The Little Mermaid)

The youngest mermaid princess fell in love with a human prince, and the only one who could give her legs was the sea witch. To reach her, the little mermaid swam past roaring whirlpools and through a forest of grabbing polyps to a house built from the remains of old shipwrecks. The witch was waiting, with fat sea snakes crawling over her that she called her little chickens.

She already knew what the mermaid wanted. She'd brew the potion, but every step on those new legs would feel like treading on knives, and if the prince married someone else, the mermaid would turn to sea foam. The price was her beautiful voice, and the mermaid agreed. This is Hans Christian Andersen's original story, so don't expect the cartoon's happy wedding. It does end gently, though, with the little mermaid rising up to become a spirit of the air.

The Snow Queen and the Flower Garden Witch (The Snow Queen)

One winter day, little Kay tied his sled to a big white sleigh, and it whisked him right out of town. The driver was the Snow Queen, made of glittering ice and wrapped in white fur. Her kisses made him forget the cold and his best friend Gerda, and she carried him off to her palace in the far north.

Gerda set off to find him, but an old woman in a big flowered sun hat pulled her boat ashore. She wasn't wicked, just lonely, and every stroke of her golden comb made Gerda forget a little more about Kay. She even sank her rose bushes underground so they wouldn't remind Gerda of home, but she forgot about the roses painted on her own hat. One look at them and Gerda remembered everything.

When Gerda finally reached the icy palace, she hugged Kay and cried, and her warm tears melted the splinter of a wicked magic mirror that had frozen his heart.

The Barleycorn Woman (Thumbelina)

There was once a woman who wished for a tiny child more than anything, so she went to see an old witch. In some versions it's a fairy, but either way she knew exactly what to do. She handed over a single barleycorn and said it wasn't the kind farmers grow or chickens peck at. "Plant it in a flowerpot," she said, "and see what happens."

The woman paid her twelve pennies and hurried home. The barleycorn sprouted into a big bud that looked just like a tulip, and when the woman kissed its petals, it popped open. Sitting in the middle was a girl no bigger than a thumb. Her mother called her Thumbelina, made her a bed from a polished walnut shell and tucked her in under a rose petal. That's where Thumbelina's adventures begin.

The Fairy Godmother (Cinderella)

Cinderella's stepsisters had gone off to the king's ball, and she was left crying by the fire when her godmother appeared. She was a fairy, and the first thing she did was send Cinderella out to the garden for a pumpkin. One tap of her wand and it became a gilded coach. Six mice from the mousetrap turned into fine horses, a whiskery rat became a jolly coachman and six lizards from behind the watering can became footmen.

Last of all, she turned Cinderella's rags into a gown that sparkled with gold and silver, and gave her a pair of glass slippers. There was just one rule: be home before midnight, because that's when the magic would wear off. On the second night of the ball, Cinderella was having so much fun she forgot the time. She ran off at the first stroke of twelve and left one glass slipper on the palace steps, which is how the prince found her again.
