About the Story of Cinderella

Cinderella is a tale of kindness, perseverance and magical transformation. Living under the cruelty of her wicked stepmother and stepsisters, Cinderella keeps her gentle spirit and hope. With help from her Fairy Godmother, she is transformed for one night and goes to the royal ball in a beautiful gown and glass slippers. The prince falls in love with her, but when the clock strikes midnight she has to hurry home, leaving behind a single glass slipper. In the end the prince finds her, and they live happily ever after.

The fairy godmother, pumpkin coach and glass slippers most people picture come from the French version by Charles Perrault, published in 1697. The Brothers Grimm told a darker version called Aschenputtel, where a hazel tree grown from her mother's grave helps Cinderella instead, and her slippers are golden. Stories of a girl who loses a slipper and marries a prince are much older still, with a Chinese version, Ye Xian, written down more than a thousand years ago.
