The wolf's plan was to climb into Grandma's bed wearing her clothes and hope nobody looked too closely. Red looked. She noticed his big ears and his big teeth, and the wolf had a quick answer every time she asked about them.

Her name comes from her hood. In France she's called Le Petit Chaperon Rouge, and a chaperon was a little hooded cap people wore long ago. Her grandmother made her a red one, and she wore it so often that everyone started calling her by it.

Little Red Ridinghood and the Woodcutter

The woodcutter wasn't always part of the story. In the oldest printed version nobody comes to help, and it ends with a warning to children about chatting with strangers. More than a hundred years later, German storytellers added a hunter who hears the wolf snoring and comes in to save the day. Many English tellings swapped him for a woodcutter with his axe.
