Witch, Sorceress or Enchantress?

Not every magical woman is the same kind of witch! Here's how to tell them apart.

Witch

A witch is the everyday magic-maker. She stirs up potions in her cauldron and zooms around on her broom. Some witches are good and some are a little bit wicked, but they all know their herbs!

Sorceress

A sorceress is a witch with BIG magic. Instead of stirring pots, she waves her hands and sparks go flying, or she reads spells out of a heavy, glowing book. Think of her as a witch who went to wizard school.

Enchantress

An enchantress uses her magic to charm people and change things. She might put a whole castle to sleep, or turn a prince into a frog. Her spells are usually sneaky rather than loud.

Fairy Godmother

A fairy godmother is the kindest kind of witch. She shows up just when someone needs help, gives her wand a wave and turns a pumpkin into a carriage. Wouldn't it be nice to have one of those?

Seer

A seer can see the future, sometimes in a crystal ball, sometimes in the smoke from a fire or in a dream. In ancient Greece, people travelled a very long way just to ask a seer what would happen next. The three witches in Macbeth were seers too, though their answers caused a lot of trouble...

Crone

A crone is an old witch with lots of wrinkles, a crooked nose and a knobbly walking stick. In fairy tales she's often the scary one, like the witch in Hansel and Gretel, but in plenty of old stories the crone is simply the wisest woman in the village.

Witches from Myths and Legends

Long before Halloween, people all over the world were telling stories about magical and powerful women. Some were goddesses who ruled the night, some were seers who could see the future, and some were wise women who lived deep in the forest...

Witches and Their Familiars

Every good witch needs a sidekick. Black cats, wise owls, clever ravens and even toads and spiders were all said to help witches with their spells...

Witches from Stories and Cartoons

The Witches of Oz

The Wizard of Oz has a good witch and a very wicked one. In L. Frank Baum's book, Glinda is actually the Good Witch of the South. The movie mixed her up with the Good Witch of the North, which is why lots of people remember her that way. And the Wicked Witch of the West? Let's just say she should have stayed away from buckets of water...

Fairy Tale Witches

A house made of gingerbread and candy sounds wonderful, doesn't it? Hansel and Gretel thought so too, until they met the old woman who lived inside. She's just one of the fairy tale witches waiting for you, along with Rapunzel's Dame Gothel, the sea witch and a fairy godmother with a very handy pumpkin...

The Three Witches from Macbeth

In Shakespeare's play Macbeth, three witches stir a bubbling cauldron and chant "Double, double toil and trouble." Their spooky predictions get a Scottish lord into a whole lot of trouble...
