A Little Teddy Bear History
The story goes that teddy bears got their name from a US president. In 1902 Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt went on a hunting trip, and the other hunters tied up a bear so he could shoot it. He refused, saying it wasn't fair. A newspaper cartoon about it went all over the country, and a shopkeeper in Brooklyn put a stuffed bear in his window with a sign calling it "Teddy's bear."
Around the same time a toy company in Germany was making its own stuffed bears with arms and legs that moved. The two kinds took off together, and kids haven't put them down since. Early teddies were often stuffed with wood shavings, which made them quite firm. Most modern ones are filled with soft fibre, so they're much better for squeezing.
