A dollhouse is a whole tiny home with its own rooms, a roof and a front door. These pages have cutaway houses with a bed and a table, little houses seen from the outside and close-ups of the kitchen, bedroom and living room.

Dollhouse Rooms

Every room in a dollhouse is a little scene of its own. Here's a close look at three of them.

Painting a Dollhouse

Lots of dollhouses come as a kit of flat wooden pieces, so building one is half the fun. Once the walls are up, the house gets painted one tiny wall at a time with a very small brush. Then comes the best part, deciding what goes in each room.

A Little Dollhouse History

The first dollhouses weren't for kids. In the 1600s, wealthy families in Europe had tiny copies of their homes built to show off, with tiny silver dishes and paintings on the walls, and the children weren't allowed to touch them. Over time the houses got simpler and cheaper, and by the 1800s toy makers were selling dollhouses to families who wanted kids to play with them. One built for a queen in the 1920s had working lights and running water, and you can still see it at a castle in England.

Today most dollhouses are made from wood, plywood or plastic, and many open at the front or the back so a kid can reach right in. Collectors often build theirs from kits at a scale where one inch in the dollhouse equals one foot in real life. That means a real door about seven feet tall becomes a door about seven inches tall. Some people add tiny lights that really switch on, and a few make an exact copy of their own home, which is where the whole idea started.
