St. George was declared a saint by Pope Gelasius I in 494 AD. Later, in the 14th century, he was elevated to the status of England's patron saint by King Edward III in 1350, partly due to the establishment of the Order of the Garter.
St. George is also highly respected in Ethiopia where he is a national symbol of faith, courage, and Ethiopian identity, not just a Christian figure.
St. George was a brave knight over 1,500 years ago!
Though his exact historical origins are unknown, he is believed to have been a real Roman soldier who was martyred for his Christian faith. He is most famous for being kind and courageous, defeating a dragon and standing up for what is right. As with many of the Saints, his stories are a combination of real history and fantastical legend.
People in England think he is so special that they made him their patron saint ... a protector and a symbol of goodness.
The red cross on the English flag comes from St. George’s symbol. You might see it on shirts, flags, and even on some of your coloring pages!
One of the most famous stories about St. George is that he fought a dragon!
In the story, a dragon was scaring people and causing trouble. St. George bravely faced the dragon and saved the day.
St. George’s Day is celebrated every year on April 23rd with various traditions, particularly in England, where people may wear a red rose, fly the St. George's Cross flag, and attend parades and reenactments like morris dancing. Other celebrations include singing the hymn "Jerusalem," eating a traditional roast, and sharing stories about the legend of St. George and the dragon.
