Cher Ami, the Pigeon
In 1918 a pigeon named Cher Ami flew 25 miles to tell headquarters where a group of trapped soldiers were. He was responsible for the rescue of nearly 200 soldiers and received a medal.

Lest We Forget Poppy
The dove with an olive branch comes from the story of Noah, when a dove returned to the ark with a fresh olive leaf and showed that the flood was ending. People have used it as a sign of peace ever since, which is why it fits Remembrance Day so well.

Veteran's Day
Veteran's Day and Remembrance Day are both celebrated on November 11th, but Remembrance Day (in the Commonwealth countries like Britain, Australia and Canada) is more like Memorial Day in the US -- confusing, I know!
