Some Halloween creatures are part person and part animal, and they turn up in stories from all over the world. This page has foxes that pass as people, serpents that guard rivers, wolf-people and a few friendly critters in witch hats for younger colorists.

Cute Halloween Animals

These three are the friendly ones. Each wears a curly witch's hat and has bold simple lines that are easy for small hands to color. Purple hats look great but green is fun too!

Myths and Folklore

People have told stories about creatures that mix human and animal for longer than anyone has been writing them down. Many of these can change shape. Some are helpful and some are definitely not.

Kitsune Coloring Pages

In Japanese folklore a kitsune is a fox that grows more tails as it gets older and wiser. The most powerful ones have nine. A kitsune can also turn into a person and it's not always clear whether it's helping you or playing a trick on you...

Leshy Coloring Page

The leshy is a forest spirit from Slavic folklore and the boss of the woods. It can grow as tall as the tallest tree or shrink down to a blade of grass. It likes to turn travellers around until they are lost. It also looks after the forest animals so be polite if you meet one. Try mossy greens and bark browns with yellow-green where the sun would hit.

Naga Coloring Pages

Nagas are serpent beings from Hindu and Buddhist stories. Many look like cobras and some have several heads. They live in rivers and lakes and underground and they are linked with rain and water. One famous naga named Mucalinda sheltered the Buddha from a storm by spreading his hood over him. Cool blues and greens work well with a metallic gel pen for the scales.

Nagual Coloring Pages

In Mesoamerican folklore a nagual is a person who can take on an animal's shape. Often it was a healer or shaman. Jaguars are the best known but coyotes and eagles show up too. The person and the animal were believed to be connected.

Vampire Bat Coloring Pages

Real vampire bats live in Central and South America. They do drink blood but only a small amount at a time and usually from sleeping livestock. Here's the funny part. The bats were named after the vampire legends and not the other way around...

Wendigo Coloring Pages

The wendigo comes from the stories of Algonquian-speaking peoples in the northern woods. It is a tall gaunt spirit of winter and hunger and in some tellings it has antlers. The old stories use it as a warning about greed...

Human Transformations

These characters are part person and part animal: a bat hero in a cape, cat women with sharp ears and sharper attitude, and a wolf-man caught partway through the change.

Batman Coloring Pages

Bats are the only mammals that truly fly and most of them find their way in the dark by listening to the echoes of their own squeaks. Not a bad trick for a hero! Black is the obvious choice for these capes but try shading it with dark blue or purple so the folds show up.

Cat Woman Coloring Pages

Cat-people have a long family tree. In ancient Egypt the goddess Bastet was shown as a woman with a cat's head. Centuries later in medieval Europe people got suspicious of cats (black ones especially) and linked them to witches. These cat women keep a bit of both: a little mystery and a lot of attitude. Try a gel pen for the glowing eyes.

Werewolf Coloring Pages

Stories of people turning into wolves go back at least to ancient Greece where King Lycaon was changed into one as a punishment from Zeus. The legend only got hairier from there...
