Maria Makiling is one of the best-loved spirits in Philippine folklore, a guardian who's said to live on Mount Makiling and look out for anyone who treats her mountain well. She's helped lost travelers find their way home, healed the sick, and even turned a hat full of ginger into gold for a kind villager.
Locals say the whole mountain is shaped like a woman lying down, her profile in the ridgeline, her hair flowing down the slope in rivers and streams. Maria isn't just a spirit who lives on Mount Makiling, she IS the mountain, which is exactly why artists draw her fading into its hills instead of standing apart from them.
Maria's territory doesn't stop at the treeline. Some versions of her legend put her in charge of Laguna de Bay too, the huge lake at the foot of the mountain, along with every fish that comes out of it, so the waterfalls and rivers are as much hers as the forest.
Maria has a reputation for repaying kindness generously and punishing greed just as hard. Villagers who leave her mountain alone get good harvests and safe passage through the woods, but more than one story ends with a greedy visitor wandering in circles for hours, unable to find the trail home.
