A mouse's whiskers are some of its most important tools. They brush against walls and the ground to help it find its way in the dark. They even pick up tiny changes in the air around it.

Simple Mice

Big shapes and bold lines. These are a good pick for preschoolers.

Mice and Cheese

Cartoon mice love cheese, but real mice aren't that keen on it. They'd much rather eat seeds, grains and fruit. Biscuits and other sweet things are a big favourite too.

Mice with Personality

Mice chatter to each other all the time, but most of their squeaks are too high for people to hear. Male mice even sing little songs to impress the females.

Mice are mostly awake at night. They spend the day tucked in their nests and come out after dark to look for food. They're great climbers and good swimmers, and they can jump about 30 cm straight up. A mother mouse can have a new litter of babies every few weeks, so a single mouse can have dozens of babies in a year.

The Battle of Frogs and Mice

A funny ancient Greek poem that pokes fun at the Iliad. A frog king offers a mouse a ride across a pond on his back. When a water snake appears the frog dives and the mouse drowns. The mice put on armour made of bean pods and go to war, and even the gods get involved. It was once credited to Homer, but it was probably written later.

The Lion and the Mouse

In this fable from Aesop a sleeping lion catches a little mouse and lets it go with a laugh. How could a mouse ever help a lion? Later the lion gets tangled in a hunter's net. The mouse hears him roar and chews through the ropes to set him free. Even the smallest friend can be a big help.

The famous 1823 poem starts on a quiet Christmas Eve when "not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse." This little mouse seems to have stayed up for a midnight snack anyway.
