Little Red Hen Coloring Pages
The Little Red Hen is an old folk tale about a hard-working hen, a few lazy friends and a loaf of fresh bread. These coloring pages follow the story from start to finish, so kids can color along as you read it together, or use them to retell the story in their own words.

The Story of the Little Red Hen
Finding the Seed
One day, while scratching around the farmyard, the Little Red Hen found a grain of wheat. She knew that if she planted it, it could grow into enough wheat to make bread.
"Not I!"
"Who will help me plant this wheat?" asked the Little Red Hen.
"Not I," said the cat.
"Not I," said the pig.
"Not I," said the mouse.
"Then I'll do it myself," said the Little Red Hen. And she did.
The Wheat Grows
The wheat grew tall and golden. The Little Red Hen asked who would help her cut it, and who would help her take it to the mill to be ground into flour. Each time, the cat, the pig and the mouse said, "Not I." So she did all the work herself.
Baking the Bread
"Who will help me bake the bread?" asked the Little Red Hen. You can probably guess what the others said. So she mixed the flour into dough and baked it herself, and soon the whole farm smelled like warm bread.
"Who Will Help Me Eat It?"
When the bread came out of the oven, the Little Red Hen asked, "Who will help me eat this bread?" This time the cat, the pig and the mouse all shouted, "I will!" But the Little Red Hen said, "No, I did all the work, so my chicks and I will eat it ourselves." And they did.

Talking About the Story
The Little Red Hen is usually told as a story about hard work: if you want to share in the reward, you have to share in the work. It's also a great story for little ones to join in on, since they can shout "Not I!" every time it comes around. Once you've read it, a few questions to talk about:
- Why didn't the cat, the pig and the mouse want to help?
- Was the Little Red Hen right to keep the bread for herself and her chicks?
- What would you have done if you were the hen? What about if you were the cat?
- What are some jobs you help with at home or at school?
