Athena in Armour

In the usual telling Athena sprang out of Zeus's head already dressed for battle (she probably had a battle cry ready too). Try bronze or silver for her helmet and breastplate with a touch of gold on the crest. Leave a few white patches on the metal so it looks shiny.

Athena's Spear, Shield and Aegis

The spear was Athena's weapon. The aegis was something stranger: a cloak or shield edged with snakes. In many tellings Perseus gave her Medusa's head and it ended up on the aegis. Dark greens work well for the snakes and a leathery brown or grey for the cloak.

Athena, Owls and Wisdom

The little owl was Athena's bird and it even appeared on ancient Athenian coins. Owls are a great excuse to practise soft colors. Use brown and cream feathers with big yellow eyes and build up the darker shades slowly. The Greek poets also gave Athena a nickname that means grey-eyed or bright-eyed so you could try grey eyes for her too.

Athena in the Myths

Athena and Poseidon once both wanted to protect the same city. Poseidon offered a spring of salt water. Athena gave the people an olive tree and they chose her, which is how Athens got its name. She also turned the boastful weaver Arachne into the very first spider after a weaving contest. And she was Odysseus's biggest fan, popping up in disguise to help him get home.

These hand-drawn pages have a classic look. The last one has a few facts about Athena printed right on the page.

About Athena, Greek goddess of wisdom and strategy

Athena was the goddess of wisdom and war, but not the loud and wild kind of war. Her specialty was strategy. Her half-brother Ares just liked the fighting while Athena liked to think a battle through first.

Her birth story is a good one. Zeus had swallowed Athena's mother, Metis, and soon after he got a terrible headache. Someone (usually Hephaestus) split his head open with an axe and out stepped Athena in full armour!

Athena was also the goddess of crafts, especially weaving and pottery. Her sacred symbols were the owl and the olive tree. The Parthenon, the great temple on the Acropolis in Athens, was built for her. She helped heroes like Odysseus and Perseus and the Romans knew her as Minerva.
