Gargoyle Coloring Pages

Gargoyles started out as rain spouts. Water ran through their open mouths and shot out away from the walls, which kept cathedral stone from getting soaked. The name even comes from an old French word for throat, so it's no accident that it sounds a bit like "gargle"!

Builders could have carved plain spouts. Instead they made fierce little monsters, because people believed the scary faces kept evil spirits away. The most detailed pages are first, and the simpler bold-line ones are further down.

Here's a bit of trivia to take with you. A carving only counts as a true gargoyle if water runs through it. The ones that just sit there looking grumpy are called grotesques, though most of us lump them all together as gargoyles anyway.

Either way they've been watching over rooftops for hundreds of years.
