Scandinavian Gnomes: The Nisse
The modern gnome owes more than a little to the Scandinavian Nisse. That stout bearded figure in the pointy hat who turns up in gardens and on Christmas mantles everywhere started out as this old household spirit from Danish and Norwegian folklore. The Nisse was the unseen guardian of the family farm. He watched over the animals, the children and the home through long northern winters. Treat him well and the household prospered. Forget his bowl of porridge on Christmas Eve and, well... gnomes have a memory longer than their beards.
The Nisse is where the garden gnome gets his hat, his beard and his quietly watchful personality. He has been part of Scandinavian family life for centuries, and if your child loves gnomes they would probably love meeting his ancestor.
