Ducks are one of the first birds most of us learn to name, and you can find them on ponds and in parks almost everywhere. Here's a fun one to listen for next time: only the mother mallards make that loud, classic quack. The drakes make a much quieter, raspy sound.

Wild Ducks
Most ducks nest on the ground, but wood ducks nest in holes high up in trees. The day after they hatch, the ducklings climb to the opening and jump, sometimes from as high as a house, and bounce safely onto the soft forest floor below.
Ducklings
Ducklings follow the very first moving thing they see after they hatch. Usually that's their mother, which is why you see them waddling along behind her in a tidy little line, but it doesn't always work out that way.
More Ducks
Ducks can stand on ice all winter without getting cold feet. The warm blood flowing down to their feet heats up the cold blood coming back, so very little warmth is lost.
