Rodan Coloring Pages
Rodan is a giant flying reptile who first appeared in the 1956 Toho film Rodan, the first kaiju film made in colour. In the story, miners on the island of Kyushu discover something hatching in caves deep beneath Mount Aso, a real active volcano. What comes out can fly faster than sound, and the wind from his wings is strong enough to tear the roofs off buildings.
His name is a fun bit of trivia. In Japan he's called Radon, short for pteranodon, the flying reptile he's based on. When the film came to North America, his name was changed to Rodan so nobody would confuse him with radon, the gas. And here's one for dinosaur fans: pteranodons weren't actually dinosaurs at all. They were pterosaurs, flying cousins of the dinosaurs.
Rodan went on to fight alongside Godzilla and Mothra against King Ghidorah in 1964. In the Monsterverse, he bursts out of a volcano in Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019), and after the big final battle, he's one of the Titans who bows to Godzilla as king.
