Yeti (Abominable Snowman) Coloring Pages

Picture a huge, shaggy creature padding through the snow high in the Himalayas, leaving giant footprints behind. That’s the Yeti, also known as the Abominable Snowman. Mountain villagers have told stories about it for generations, and climbers still report strange tracks now and then. Nobody has ever proven it’s real, which is exactly why people keep looking.

The Yeti isn’t one story. It’s a whole pile of them, and some are a lot older than others.

The Sherpa people of the Himalayas have told stories about a wild creature of the high snows for generations. Their name for it is often written “meh-teh,” which usually means “man-bear.” The “Abominable Snowman” name came later, when a newspaper writer made it up in 1921 after a climbing team spotted giant footprints.

Over the years, people have gone looking for proof. Monks in Nepal kept a shriveled hand they said was a Yeti’s, but tests on a few of its bones said human. In 1960 Sir Edmund Hillary, one of the first two people to climb Everest, borrowed a famous “Yeti scalp” to have it studied, and scientists said it came from a goat-like animal called a serow.

Nobody has ever proven the Yeti is real. But the Himalayas are huge and full of places hardly anyone has seen, so the stories keep going.

Happy coloring!
