Squirrels are some of the most fun animals to color... bushy tails, chubby cheeks stuffed with acorns, and those big curious eyes. These pages show them doing what squirrels do best: climbing trees, burying treasure, and causing a little chaos in the leaves.
Color their fur brown, gray, or rusty red. Add a forest background, some falling acorns, a pile of pine cones.
Cute and Cartoon Squirrels
These squirrels are all about big eyes and even bigger acorns. Gray and brown are the classics but a purple squirrel sounds pretty great to me. Real squirrels can swivel their back feet around to face backwards so they can run headfirst down a tree trunk. Draw a tree behind your squirrel and you can show off that trick.
Realistic Squirrels
Most gray squirrels have a gray back and a white belly with a touch of brown here and there. Start with a light color and build the darker shades up slowly. Colored pencils are perfect for fur because you can use short strokes the way the hairs grow. Leave the edge of the tail a little lighter and it will look fluffy. Squirrels use that tail for balance and for staying warm and for sending signals to other squirrels.
Red Squirrels
The red squirrel is a small, rusty-coated tree squirrel, usually 7 to 8 inches long with a bushy tail nearly as long as its body. In winter it grows tufts of fur on its ears. It lives in conifer forests across Europe, Asia, and (the American red squirrel, a close relative) North America, where it feeds mainly on pine and spruce seeds. It stashes cones in underground caches called middens for the winter, and it’s known for loud, scolding chatter when something disturbs its territory. For coloring, go for rusty orange-red fur with a creamy white belly. Add a darker red-brown in the shadows and don’t forget those ear tufts.
Squirrels in Autumn
Autumn is squirrel season. They spend the cooler months burying acorns and nuts to eat later. Some of those nuts never get dug up and a few even grow into trees. Try warm oranges and reds and yellows for the leaves and a cooler brown or gray for the squirrel so it stands out. This group goes from easy pages for little hands to fine line pages for grown-up colorers.
Baby Squirrels
Baby squirrels are called kits. They are born with no fur and their eyes shut and they stay in the nest for the first couple of months. This kit is much fluffier than a real newborn so go ahead and give it soft brown or gray fur.
Squirrels at School
These four squirrels have been busy with school, reading and math and science. Finish the lesson by coloring them in. They make a quiet activity for the classroom or the kitchen table.
Native American Art Squirrel
This squirrel is drawn in a Native American art style. Instead of coloring it one flat shade try filling the body with patterns and bright colors. Stripes and dots and zigzags all work well.Native American coloring pages
Connect the Dots and Dotted Outlines
Join the dots to uncover the squirrel and the acorn. One page counts from 2 to 20 and the other goes through the alphabet from a to m. The dotted outline page is the easiest of the three. Trace over the dotted lines first and then color it in.
