Karate is one of the world’s most popular martial arts. It’s known for powerful punches, fast kicks, and disciplined training. But it’s not just about strength... karate also teaches respect, patience, and self-control, making it a favorite for kids and adults alike.
Karate began hundreds of years ago on the island of Okinawa, Japan. At the time, weapons were restricted, so people developed ways to defend themselves using only their hands and feet. These methods blended Okinawan traditions with Chinese martial arts brought by traders and travelers.

The word karate means “empty hand,” showing its focus on unarmed defense. Over the centuries, karate was refined into different schools and styles, each with unique moves and training methods. By the early 1900s, karate had spread across Japan, and from there to the rest of the world. Today, millions of people practice karate as a martial art, a sport, and a way to build confidence.
Fun fact: Karate made its Olympic debut at the Tokyo 2020 Games, with athletes competing in both sparring and kata (forms).

Karate has many techniques, but the main ones are strikes (punches, chops, kicks), blocks to defend, and stances that give balance and power. Practicing forms, called kata, helps students memorize moves and build discipline.
