A splinter from a troll’s magic mirror lands in Kay’s eye and heart, and suddenly everything lovely looks ugly to him. Then the Snow Queen whisks him away to her palace of ice, and his friend Gerda sets out to bring him home.
Hans Christian Andersen published “The Snow Queen” in 1844 and it’s one of his longest tales, told in seven short stories. Along the way Gerda meets a lonely old enchantress, a robber girl and a clever reindeer. In the end it’s Gerda’s love that melts the ice in Kay’s heart.
The Snow Queen
She rules the winter. She sweeps through the sky in a sleigh and the snowflakes swarm around her like white bees. One kiss from her makes Kay forget his home and everyone he loves, and she carries him off to her palace of ice. Hans Christian Andersen never makes her cruel for the sake of it. She’s cold in every way, and that’s what makes her so hard to reach.
Snow Queen's Palace
Her palace is built from drifting snow, with walls that the wind carved and doors that are really howling gales. It has more than a hundred halls, all lit by the northern lights, and every one of them is empty and silent. In the middle sits a frozen lake that cracked into thousands of pieces, and Kay spends his days there arranging the ice into patterns. He’s trying to spell one special word, and if he gets it right the Snow Queen has promised to set him free.
The Garden Enchantress
She isn’t really a villain. She’s a lonely old woman with a cottage, a cherry tree and a garden that never stops blooming, and she wants a little girl to keep. When Gerda arrives, she combs her hair with a golden comb until Gerda forgets why she came. She even hides her rose bushes underground so nothing reminds Gerda of her friend Kay.
