Welcome to our Coyolxauhqui coloring pages section.

Coyolxauhqui, the Aztec moon goddess, is a dazzling and dramatic figure from Aztec mythology. Her name means “She Who Is Adorned with Bells,” and she’s often shown with a sparkling headdress and ornate jewelry. In her story, she tries to challenge her mother, Coatlicue, but is famously defeated by her brother Huitzilopochtli, the sun god... a tale that shows the epic battle between night and day. The famous stone relief of Coyolxauhqui, discovered near the Templo Mayor, captures her in all her celestial glory, full of lunar symbols and intricate designs.

Coyolxauhqui's Tale:

I was Coyolxauhqui, daughter of Coatlicue, the mother of the gods. I had grown strong and proud among my many brothers, and the sky and earth alike seemed to bend beneath our power. But when I learned of my mother’s strange and sudden pregnancy, a fire of anger and fear rose within me. How could she carry a child that no one had announced? I could not understand, and I could not accept it.

I gathered my brothers, our armor clinking and our voices rising like thunder across the mountains. We marched toward our mother, the earth trembling beneath our feet. The sun glinted off my headdress and bracelets, making me feel unstoppable. But then he came... Huitzilopochtli, my brother, born fully grown and armed with a spear of blazing fire. He met us with a power I could not match. One by one, my brothers fell, and I tumbled, cut and shattered by his strength.

Yet I did not vanish. Even as I fell, the sky claimed me. My body became the moon, my face cast in silver light, and my broken form traced across the heavens. Night after night, I circle the earth, shining for those who watch the dark sky, a reminder that even in defeat, I endure. The stars follow me, the tides obey me, and the night listens when I pass, carrying my story across the heavens forever.
