The Hawaiian Monk Seal (Neomonachus schauinslandi) is primarily found in the Hawaiian Islands and is considered one of the most endangered marine mammals in the world. While its main habitat is the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, it occasionally visits the main Hawaiian Islands as well.
Apart from Hawaii, there is another species of monk seal called the Mediterranean Monk Seal (Monachus monachus), which resides in the Mediterranean Sea and the northeastern Atlantic Ocean. The Mediterranean Monk Seal is also critically endangered, with a very small population. It's important to note that these two species, despite sharing the name "monk seal," are different and have distinct habitats. The Hawaiian Monk Seal is native to the Pacific, while the Mediterranean Monk Seal is found in the Atlantic and Mediterranean regions.
The Story of Keanu the Monk Seal:
Once upon a time in the clear blue waters of Hawaii, there lived a playful Hawaiian Monk Seal named Keanu. Keanu was no ordinary seal; he had a twinkle in his eye and a heart full of curiosity.
