About the Hyades

hyad pencil crayon artThe Hyades are a captivating group of stars steeped in Greek mythology, known for their unique place in the celestial tapestry and their mythological significance. According to ancient tales, the Hyades were nymphs, daughters of Atlas and Aethra, turned into a star cluster by Zeus, the king of the gods, in recognition of their sorrow over the death of their brother, Hyas. This cluster, located in the constellation of Taurus, is often referred to as the "rainy ones" because their rising and setting were believed to herald the start of the rainy season. The Hyades star cluster forms the head of the celestial bull, with its most prominent stars forming a distinctive V-shape. This grouping is not just a highlight for stargazers but also a symbol of unity and collective mourning in mythology, reminding us of the deep connections between the heavens and the stories of the gods and goddesses that ancient cultures sought to understand and explain through the constellations.
