After World War I, bright red poppies grew in the battlefields of Europe where many soldiers had fought. A Canadian soldier, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, noticed them and wrote the famous poem “In Flanders Fields.” The poppies became a symbol of remembrance for those who served and lost their lives in war. Each year, people wear poppies and display them to honor peace and the courage of those who came before us.

Poppies are the National flower of Poland. The bright red corn poppy (Papaver rhoeas) is a much-loved flower often seen in fields, gardens, and traditional folk art. They appear on embroidered clothes, painted pottery, and harvest decorations. Poppies are also a gentle reminder of the strength and spirit of the Polish people, blooming again each summer no matter what hardships the land has faced.

The California poppy (Eschscholzia californica) is the state flower of California. These golden-orange blooms open in the sunshine and close at night or on cloudy days. They carpet hillsides and roadsides in spring, creating bright fields of color. Sometimes called the “golden poppy,” this cheerful flower represents warmth, imagination, and the sunny spirit of California.

About Poppies:

Poppies are bright, cheerful flowers that seem to glow like little suns in a field. Their petals are thin and silky, often a bold red or soft orange, fluttering in the breeze like delicate paper. In the center of each flower sits a dark, round seed pod surrounded by tiny stamens, giving the poppy its distinctive look. The stems are slender and green, bending gracefully under the weight of the blooms.

In late spring and summer, poppies appear in clusters, painting fields and gardens with vivid color. When coloring or drawing poppies, you can use shades of red, orange, or even pink for the petals, adding depth with darker lines near the center. The stems and leaves can be bright green, sometimes with a hint of gray or blue. Poppies remind us of warmth, sunlight, and the beauty of simple, cheerful blooms that brighten the world around them.
