German Shepherd
Brave, intelligent, and loyal, the German Shepherd is one of the most recognizable military breeds in the world. Known for their strength and trainability, they have served in nearly every major conflict since World War I. Their sharp senses and calm focus under pressure make them ideal for patrol, detection, and protection work.
A German Shepherd’s natural desire to please and bond with a handler helps form the deep partnerships that military service requires. They are often the first breed that comes to mind when people picture a “war dog.”
Belgian Malinois (Belgian Shepherd)
Fast, fearless, and incredibly focused, the Belgian Malinois has become the most common Military Working Dog (MWD) in service today. Smaller and lighter than the German Shepherd, the Malinois is built for speed and agility... perfect for detection work and missions requiring quick movement.
These dogs are highly intelligent and have a strong work ethic, often described as “all drive and heart.” Malinois dogs have served in elite military units, including the Navy SEALs, and are known for their loyalty and precision in the field. They love to work, and they thrive when given both a job and a trusted partner.
Labrador Retriever
Gentle, social, and hardworking, the Labrador Retriever is a favorite for scent detection and search work. Labs are known for their extraordinary noses and calm personalities, which make them ideal for working in airports, vehicles, and crowded environments where calm focus is essential. Unlike patrol dogs, they usually work unarmed, relying on their sense of smell rather than strength.
Labradors are also used as therapy and service dogs for veterans, thanks to their steady temperament and affectionate nature. In every role, they bring patience, persistence, and wagging enthusiasm.
Dutch Shepherd
The Dutch Shepherd is a versatile, athletic breed prized for its intelligence and adaptability. Originating from the Netherlands, these dogs were originally herders and farm guardians, which gave them excellent stamina and a strong sense of responsibility. In military and police work, they excel in patrol, detection, and protection roles.
Dutch Shepherds are quick learners with a balanced temperament... they can switch from high-energy activity to calm obedience in seconds. Their striking brindle coats and sharp alertness make them stand out both on duty and in training fields around the world.
English Springer Spaniel
Small but mighty, the English Springer Spaniel is a detection specialist with a cheerful personality and boundless energy. They are most commonly used by the British military, but are becoming more popular as low profile sniffer dogs in the US as well. Their compact size and friendly nature allow them to work in tight spaces such as vehicles, buildings, or crowded transport hubs. Springers are known for their incredible noses. They can detect explosives and narcotics hidden where larger dogs can’t reach.
Because of their gentle disposition, they also put people at ease, making them ideal for security work in civilian areas. Don’t be fooled by their wagging tails, these little dogs are fearless professionals with big hearts.
Duties and Jobs
Military dogs take on many important tasks that help keep people safe. Their training can take months or even years, and they often save lives without anyone ever knowing their names.
Detection Dogs – Sniff out explosives or narcotics before danger strikes.

Search and Rescue Dogs – Find survivors after disasters or attacks.

Sergeant Stubby (WWI) – A stray who warned soldiers of gas attacks and once caught a German spy.
Chips (WWII) – A mixed-breed who charged an enemy machine-gun nest and saved his platoon.
Lucca (USMC) – Served over 400 missions and saved many lives before losing a leg to an explosive.
Cairo (Navy SEAL) – A Belgian Malinois who helped during the mission to locate Osama bin Laden.
Lex (Iraq War) – Refused to leave his fallen handler and was later adopted by the family.
Training and Teamwork
Military Working Dogs and their handlers form deep bonds built on trust. Together, they learn to obey hand signals, detect scents, and stay calm in stressful situations. Handlers often say their dogs are their best friends and protectors.

Across the United States, special memorials honor dogs who gave their lives in service. Their loyalty is remembered with plaques, statues, and the simple phrase, “Always Faithful.”
