About Cougars
The cougar holds a world record for having more names than any other animal. Mountain lion, puma, panther and catamount are just a few of them, and they all mean the same cat. Cougars roam farther than any other wild land mammal in the Americas, all the way from the Yukon down to the tip of South America. In Canada, most of them live in the mountains and forests of BC and Alberta.
Even though they're big, cougars can't roar. Instead they purr, hiss, chirp and whistle, and they're famous for a spooky scream that sounds a lot like a person yelling. They're amazing jumpers too, and can spring about 4.5 metres straight up into a tree.
Coloring a Cougar
Cougars don't have spots or stripes, which makes them perfect for practising smooth shading. Their coat can be anywhere from sandy tan to tawny gold to a greyish brown, usually a little darker along the back. Leave the chin, throat, chest and belly a pale cream or white.
Look for the dark patches on each side of the muzzle where the whiskers grow, and use black or dark brown for the backs of the ears and the tip of that long, thick tail. Cougar eyes are usually a golden or greenish gold.
For cubs, add dark brown spots all over, rings around the tail and bright blue eyes. For the background, try grey rocky mountains, tall pine trees or a sparkling river.
