The African Wild Cat (Felis lybica) is considered the primary ancestor of the domestic cat (Felis catus). Genetic studies have shown that domestic cats are descended predominantly from a subspecies of the African Wild Cat, specifically Felis lybica lybica, which is native to the regions of the Near East and Northeast Africa.

This domestication process likely began around 9,000 years ago in the Near East, where early agricultural communities began to attract rodents, which in turn attracted wild cats. Over time, as these cats adapted to human environments and were selectively bred for traits that were more desirable for living in close proximity to humans, such as tameness and sociability, the domestic cat as we know it today gradually evolved.

The resemblance between the African Wild Cat and many modern-day domestic cats is still quite noticeable, especially in their size, body shape, and coat pattern, which often includes stripes and a ticked coat.
